Buying a first home is an exciting milestone, but it can also be overwhelming. First-time homebuyers have to navigate mortgage rates, down payments, credit requirements, closing costs, and many other financial decisions they may have never encountered before. For Black Hills Federal Credit Union (BHFCU), understanding the needs and concerns of these customers can help the organization provide services and information that make the home-buying process easier.

To better understand this customer segment, I created a fictional customer persona named Megan Anderson. Megan is a 27-year-old professional living in Rapid City, South Dakota. She has a bachelor’s degree, works full-time as a marketing coordinator, and earns approximately $55,000 per year. She currently lives with her long-term partner and hopes to purchase her first home and eventually start a family.
What Matters to Megan?
Megan values independence, financial stability, convenience, and trustworthy advice. She is responsible with her money but recognizes that purchasing a home is a much larger financial decision than anything she has made before. Her main goal is to stop renting and begin building equity through homeownership.
However, several concerns could make her hesitant to purchase a home. She worries about having enough money for a down payment, qualifying for a competitive interest rate, maintaining a good credit score, and understanding all of the costs associated with a mortgage. She may also wonder how much house she can realistically afford.
BHFCU offers services that directly address some of these concerns. The credit union offers several mortgage options, including conventional, FHA, VA, and first-time homebuyer programs. It also provides mortgage calculators and access to local mortgage professionals who can help customers understand their financing options.
How Megan Makes Financial Decisions
As a younger consumer, Megan is comfortable researching major purchases online before making a decision. She may begin by searching Google for information such as “first-time homebuyer programs in South Dakota,” “mortgage rates in Rapid City,” or “what size house can I afford?” From there, she may visit lender websites, use mortgage calculators, read online reviews, and compare her options.
Social media can also play an important role in reaching consumers like Megan. According to researchers, younger adults may use platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to get some answers. Financial tips, first-time homebuyer educational content, and short videos explaining the mortgage process could therefore help BHFCU connect with customers like Megan.
Her customer journey may begin with an online search that introduces her to BHFCU. She could then visit the BHFCU website, research mortgage options, use a mortgage calculator, and contact a mortgage representative. If she feels that BHFCU offers competitive financing and trustworthy guidance, her next steps would include applying for pre-approval, searching for a home, completing the mortgage process, and eventually managing her mortgage through the credit union.
From Uncertainty to Confidence
A customer like Megan is not simply looking for the lowest possible mortgage rate. She is also looking for reassurance and guidance during one of the biggest financial decisions of her life. Her family, partner, friends, real estate agent, online reviews, and financial experts may all influence which lender she ultimately chooses.
For BHFCU, this creates an opportunity to position itself as both a financial institution and a resource for first-time buyers. Educational content about down payments, credit scores, mortgage terminology, and home affordability could answer Megan’s questions before she ever speaks with a mortgage representative. Local assistance and convenient digital tools can then help turn her initial research into a long-term relationship with the credit union.
Megan’s mindset can be summarized with a simple statement: “I’m ready to stop renting, but I want to make sure I’m making a smart financial decision.” Understanding that mindset can help BHFCU communicate with first-time buyers in a way that reduces uncertainty and builds trust.
